Hundreds of Kenyan’s are fleeing the Mathare slum in Nairobi as police attempt to crackdown on the notorious Mungiki clan. Residents live in fear of both the Mungiki clan and now the police raids as police indiscriminately search houses looking for weapons and members of the sect.

The Mungiki have been blamed for up to 20 deaths including a number of beheadings in the past 3 months, but the police response has lead to 30 killings and reports of excessive force being used are widespread.

Originally formed out of the uprising of the Mau Mau against British colonial rule, the Mungiki have now turned into a Mafia style underground organisation specialising in extortion, murder and political violence.

Amongst other things the Munigiki are renowned for their belief in traditional African values, which include the use of snuff in many of their religious ceremonies.
