Why isn't snuff more popular?
I suppose the question is a bit daft really, who can say for certain why it hasn't 'taken off' but I would like to speculate...
I think people see it as a little strange. Sniffing substances up your nose sort of smacks of substance abuse (cocaine, glue & solvents) and has a negative conotation that way. I also suppose people who want to try tobacco try cigarettes first as they are the most obvious choice...there is also an aspect of smoking being 'cool' (I know it isn't but for some reason it is still considered to look cool, especially among teenagers)
Is snuff illegal to advertise via TV and billboards the same as cigarettes and cigars are? I don't think I have ever seen adverts for it (even before the legislation was brought in)
I just thought this might be an interesting topic of conversation...

Yes indeeed it is strange
Yes indeeed it is strange that it isn't more popular, but I think you have hit the nail on the head really. Most people don't want to stick things up their nose and to be honest it looks really dodgy when you are out in public. But I kind of like that!!
As snuff is a tobacco product it falls under the same legislation as any other form of tobacco, which is why you wouldn't have seen any advertising for it. This is a shame really as compared to smoking cigarettes, snuff is a lot better for you and every person that switches to snuff instead of smoking is doing themselves a favour in the long run.
Anyway, in the meantime it's up to us chosen few to enjoy the virtues of snuff,

Hi Snuffman It is a shame
Hi Snuffman
It is a shame but there you go, as you say we'll keep our end up and try to spread the word!
I only have two friends who smoke, I offered them snuff a while ago. One of them tried some and ended up with most of it all over his face, the other looked at it with suspicion then refused to try it at all.
I have never really smoked myself, I dabbled when I was a teenager (as most do I imagine) but never took the habit up but I really enjoy snuffing. My technique needs improving as sometimes my nose feels sore after I've snuffed, I don't think i'm sniffing it too hard but who knows?
Have there ever been organised snuff events in Great Britain?
If you are getting a sore
If you are getting a sore nose I would recommend rinsing it out with water after every few snuffs. The best thing to clean your nasal passage is a saline solution, which sorts it out properly.
With regards to organised snuff events, I haven't heard of anything for a while, however, I am keen to have a meet with fellow snuffers in London soon.
One day I want to have an 'A-Z' tasting session, where I bring along a snuff for each letter of the alphabet. However, at the moment I cant find any snuffs beginning with Q or X!
Will put a notice on the site if there is enough interest.

officially inteterested!
Thanks for the advice Snuffman!
I would like to officially register my interest in meeting up in London for a snuff 'tasting' it would be great to go to an event like that. My father-in-law would be interested too!
Perhaps a new thread to gauge interest would be appropriate?
Count me in!
Count me in! My son in law is also a member of this forum, so that would be two of us. Preferably not a Sunday though as, in my case, I am a vicar-type person (although Sunday afternoons would probably be ok)
Cheers

meeting up..
I have already posted this message whilst I wasn't logged in (I must try and break that habit) but all I said was I would be interested in meeting up in London and i'm sure my father-in-law would be interested too...
Is the need to wash out the nose something you end up having to do regularly as a snuffer or will the soreness go with time? I take it any discomfort I experience is likely to be down to my nose being irritated by the powder?
Sore Nose
Yes, i think that some of the snuff particles will cause the irritation, so is always good practice to have a good clean out!
I must be lucky, been taking
I must be lucky, been taking snuff for years and never had a sore nose yet! My advice is to sniff easy, never ever sniff hard and to give your nose a gentle "pick" once a day.
after recently being
after recently being reintroduced to snuff by a friend, i've bought a selection, and plan to quit the cancer sticks soon.
as for popularity, you'd be surprised. i now take varying selection to pub, and before they've hit table, i'm questioned if i have any, and what new flavours! at least half dozen pals now interested in buying, half of which wanting to stop fags. at usually under 2 quid a tin i'm more than happy to spend, spread word, and enjoy the (positive) reactions. plenty of comments originally that it felt "illegal". that soon went, now all snuffing openly. i snuffed myself regularly at recent test match, no doubt under glare of sky sports cameras!!
as for cleaning, i use nasal saline douche by "neilmed". ask at boots, they are authorised stockist. its nhs approved saline nose and sinus cleaner
Good tips Paul and great
Good tips Paul and great that you are introducing others to the World of snuff as well.
I'm off to the next test match at Lords as well and will also be partaking in snuff use throughout the day, so good to see someone else already trying this!
Just going to have a pinch of Gawith Whisky now to celebrate today's series win!
