Snuff Goes on Sale in New Zealand
Over the next few weeks 'Singleton's snuff' will go on sale in tobacconists across New Zealand as a test case to see whether there is a market for smokeless tobacco as a substitute for cigarettes.
Studies from the Christchurch School of Medicine concluded that oral snuff "considerably safer than smoking, but still carried greater risks than not using tobacco at all". The study also recommended that snuff should be used as a "second-line quit-smoking product after nicotine-replacement therapy patches and gum", although the Ministry of Health are not as convinced.
Whilst Oral Snuff like snus is still illegal in New Zealand, nasal snuff can be sold to the over 18's, although, unlike in the UK the price of snuff is higher than cigarettes and other forms of tobacco.
